  • Belgian Horse in Autumn

    Belgian Horse in Autumn

October 2018 - Bristol, Vermont I often take the backroad home from Lincoln because I like seeing Deerleap Mountain from the other side. As I came in sight of the mountain, there were five beautiful Belgian horses prancing in a meadow with the foliage-covered hills lit up around them. I got out of the car to get a closer look and this one came running over to see me. Isn't he gorgeous?

  • Viceroy Butterfly on Goldenrod

    Viceroy Butterfly on Goldenrod

Bristol, Vermont I love crossing the brook at the edge of our yard and walking the path along the ponds that leads to the New Haven River. The ponds are outlined with milkweed and goldenrod in full bloom in late August, creating a perfect butterfly habitat. I first thought this was a monarch but then noticed the band along the lower wings which distinguishes the viceroy. I learned it is considered a monarch "mimic"...since monarchs are distasteful to predators, birds would also avoid viceroys. How about that!

  • Cooper's Hawk in Snow

    Cooper's Hawk in Snow

On a snowy day in February, I stepped out on my porch with my camera for a few images of snow falling in the trees. I literally gasped when I saw this Cooper's Hawk about 20 feet away in the tree next to our bird feeders. I think he was looking for a snack...and it wasn’t seeds. I was wondering why the birds had all disappeared! He is a gorgeous bird and a ferocious predator. 2021 February -- Bristol, Vermont

  • Belgian Horse on a Snowy Day (Duke)

Belgian Horse on a Snowy Day (Duke)

I saw this majestic beauty in the falling snow and had to stop. He was quite curious and trotted right over to the fence. I wished I had an apple or carrot for him. His owner was boiling maple sap for syrup at the sugarhouse and he uses a team of Belgians to haul the sap out of the woods. He told me the name of this handsome lad is Duke! New Haven Mills, Vermont - March 2017

    Pony in the Snow

I just had to stop to say hello to this fuzzy pony. He was so curious and seemed impervious to the falling snow. Middlebury, Vermont - December 2016

  • Geese Gathering

    Geese Gathering

Otter Creek near Vergennes, Vermont - March 2019 These were just some of the hundreds of Canada Geese who had settled in on the ice along the open channel of Otter Creek in early spring. I could have watched them for hours.

  • Two Geese on Ice

    Two Geese on Ice

Otter Creek near Vergennes, Vermont - late March 2019 I went out to Otter Creek outside of Vergennes in late March and there were hundreds of Canada Geese settled onto the ice near the open channel of water. I enjoyed watching them for a good half hour at their spring gathering. .

  • Newborn Fawn

    Newborn Fawn

Bristol, Vermont - June 2015. My daily walk to the river is on a path that winds around the ponds and through the woods. On this day, my little dog and I startled a large deer that bounded away. But as we looped back around on the path, I noticed a small lump of color in the grasses next to the path and as I got closer, I saw this fawn! We must have walked right by it before and my dog walked past it again within two feet, still without noticing! I quickly shooshed him further away and stepped away myself before getting this shot from a distance.

  • Fox Cubs

    Fox Cubs

Lincoln, Vermont - May 2015. A friend invited us to see a den of fox cubs in the meadow near her house. We stayed a respectful distance away and watched them while they watched us. They are so playful and agile! And I love their alert ears!

Bristol, Vermont - June 2017. This Eastern Tiger Swallowtail looked especially lovely on the Siberian Iris in my garden. I like that each has distinct colors and patterns.
