  • Into the Woods

    Into the Woods

It was like a dream out there on the trail, following the tracks through trees coated in new snow and beech leaves still hanging on to give their spots of color in a white world.

  • Dusky Mountain Glow

    Dusky Mountain Glow

This view of Mt. Abe from Lincoln is gorgeous in winter. I was glad to catch the last light of day reflected on the mountaintop. 2021 January -- Lincoln, Vermont

First Snow on the Gap Pond - Buels Gore, VT

October 2018 - I could see there was snow on the high peaks on this morning. So I drove up the Gap Road to the quiet little pond at the top and saw this!

  • Full Snow Moon Rising

    Full Snow Moon Rising

I was out looking for a good location to capture the full moon but clouds moved in so I headed home. As I turned in my driveway, I saw the full moon just rising over the top of South Mountain. There's no place like home! Bristol, Vermont - 2021 February

  • Cooper's Hawk in Snow

    Cooper's Hawk in Snow

On a snowy day in February, I stepped out on my porch with my camera for a few images of snow falling in the trees. I literally gasped when I saw this Cooper's Hawk about 20 feet away in the tree next to our bird feeders. I think he was looking for a snack...and it wasn’t seeds. I was wondering why the birds had all disappeared! He is a gorgeous bird and a ferocious predator. 2021 February -- Bristol, Vermont

  • Full Snow Moon

    Full Snow Moon

It was bitterly cold as the full moon rose but the moonlight lit up the trees and a ski track in the snow beautifully. January 2020 -- Bristol, Vermont

  • March Blizzard in Bristol

    March Blizzard in Bristol

This late winter Nor-easter brought two feet of new snow to Bristol. When I got this shot, the storm was winding down and people were starting to venture out on Main Street. Bristol, Vermont - March 2017

  • Blue Water at Bartlett Falls in Winter

Blue Water at Bartlett Falls in Winter

March 2018 - Bristol, Vermont The water was such an amazing color at Bartlett Falls when I clambered up the steep snow-plow bank, strapped on my snowshoes, and made my way through the untracked deep snow to the cliff overlooking the river. It was stunning to see the hidden beauty of the falls in winter. I read later that "Ice only appears blue when it is sufficiently consolidated that bubbles do not interfere with the passage of light. Without the scattering effect of air bubbles, light can penetrate ice undisturbed. In ice, the absorption of light at the red end of the spectrum is six times greater than at the blue end." Now you know!

  • Golden Hour Light on Mt. Abe

Golden Hour Light on Mt. Abe

Snow-covered Mt. Abe in Lincoln is quite spectacular, especially when it is lit by the last, golden light of the day. This view was looking east along the New Haven River.

  • Solstice Dusk - Lincoln, Vermont

    Solstice Dusk - Lincoln, Vermont

Solstice is a special time of the year in the North Country. I believe it is important to pause to take in the shortest day of the year and to mark the change in seasons. In this case, I was on a backroad in Lincoln with a remarkable view of the last light of day on Mt. Abe.

  • Santa's Clothesline - Huntington, Vermont

    Santa's Clothesline - Huntington, Vermont

I will never forget this Christmas morning. We went for a morning ski and on our way home, I spotted Santa's Laundry hanging on a clothesline!

  • Gilmore Trail

    Gilmore Trail

January 2016 - Rikert Nordic, Ripton, Vermont It's magical out there in the winter woods! On this day I was out for a short ski on one of my favorite trails that goes through a marvelous stand of conifers. The woods were dark but the light in the distance at the clearing was breathtaking, like a portal into another world. I got my camera out for a shot and this skier appeared to complete the scene!

  • A Little Ice Magic

    A Little Ice Magic

I am fascinated by the forms and patterns in ice, especially as it takes shape along the edge of open water. I saw this sculptural form on the edge of our pond on a fine day in February. February 2020 -- Bristol, Vermont

  • Farmhouse With Icicles

    Farmhouse With Icicles

I love the clean, simple lines of a classic Vermont farmhouse in winter...especially when icicles are edging the porch roof. January 2020 - Ripton, Vermont

  • Ice "Wave" on Lake Champlain

    Ice "Wave" on Lake Champlain

March 2015 - Lake Champlain near Burlington, Vermont The entire lake froze over in 2015. If you wanted to, you could walk across the lake from Vermont to New York! I got nervous crossing patches of clear ice because it looks deceptively like open water and I just couldn't convince my mind otherwise. I thought this ice past the breakwater looked like the spray of a wave frozen in mid splash!

  • Yellow & White

    Yellow & White

Gilmore House at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton is a cheerful sight after swooping along the curves of the ski trail in deep, fresh snow. It is one of the many yellow buildings that are part of the Breadloaf Campus of Middlebury College.

  • Star Barn

    Star Barn

Ripton, Vermont - February 2018 I think it is charming when people decorate their barns! I loved this red barn with the white snow and two stars adding some pizazz.

  • Rock Bluff at Saxton Point

    Rock Bluff at Saxton Point

I love the layered rock on this exposed bluff capped by cedar trees at Shelburne Farms. The beach here at Saxton Point is full of flat black & white striped rocks and smooth driftwood. I've even seen a spiral fossil on the breakwater. It's a picturesque spot looking out on Lake Champlain. Shelburne Farms, Vermont -- 2021 February

  • Winter Sunset Glow on Mt. Abraham

Winter Sunset Glow on Mt. Abraham

I went to this spot to photograph the full Super Moon which was due to rise shortly after sunset. It was bitter cold…only 5 degrees although not windy. As I was waiting, I saw the mountain light up with the reflected glow of the setting sun. Afterwards, I went to warm up in my car and discovered the car battery had died…one of the hazards of winter photography in Vermont! Luckily, I had just enough cell phone battery to call my husband to rescue me. January 1, 2018 - New Haven Junction, Vermont

  • Winter Woods Magic

    Winter Woods Magic

There is a fairytale quality to the snow-covered evergreen forest in winter. I can almost imagine a Snow Queen in this cathedral of trees surrounded by woodland creatures. 2021 January -- Ripton, Vermont

  • Weathered Barn in Snow

  • Frost Flowers on the Pond

    Frost Flowers on the Pond

December 2016 - Bristol, Vermont This ice and frost formation along the edge of the pond caught my eye on my daily walk to the river on this day in late December. The next morning, it had completely disappeared.

  • Ice Bubbles

    Ice Bubbles

Our pond often has interesting ice patterns but I have never seen ice bubbles before! Bristol, Vermont - March 2020
