The water was such an amazing color at Bartlett Falls when I clambered up the steep snow-plow bank, strapped on my snowshoes, and made my way through the untracked deep snow to the cliff overlooking the river. It was stunning to see the hidden beauty of the falls in winter. I read later that "Ice only appears blue when it is sufficiently consolidated that bubbles do not interfere with the passage of light. Without the scattering effect of air bubbles, light can penetrate ice undisturbed. In ice, the absorption of light at the red end of the spectrum is six times greater than at the blue end." Now you know!
